Contingency Fee Arrangements
For most personal injury, disability, and accident benefits matters, UL Lawyers acts on a contingency fee basis. You pay no legal fees unless we recover compensation on your behalf.
| Stage of Resolution | Maximum Contingency Fee Percentage |
|---|---|
| Settled before commencement of trial | Up to 33.33% (one-third) of the amount recovered |
| Resolved at or after commencement of trial | Up to 40% of the amount recovered |
How contingency fees work: The fee is calculated as a percentage of the total amount recovered, before deduction of disbursements (such as expert reports, court filing fees, and medical records) and applicable taxes. Disbursements and HST are charged in addition to the legal fee.
Standard Form Contingency Fee Agreement: All contingency fee retainers are documented using the Law Society of Ontario's Standard Form Contingency Fee Agreement. The specific percentage applicable to your matter, along with full disclosure of disbursements and other charges, will be set out in a written retainer agreement before we begin work.
No upfront payment: You pay no legal fees if we are unable to recover compensation. The fee is paid out of the settlement or judgment funds when your matter resolves.
Past results are not necessarily indicative of future results. The amount recovered and other litigation outcomes will vary according to the facts in individual cases.
